With the limited details given, we can not give you a reason why this
happens.

Is the router a wired or wireless model?

Both. I connect via ethernet cable , and three people upstairs connect via
wireless.
I have flushed the dns cache and also rebooted the computer and still am

Please note the wireless routers have a tendency of getting their
"power" knocked out or router "reboot" by various interference
signals. Things that can cause wireless router reboots:

1) Microwave ovens
2) Cordless phones
3) Bluetooth devices
4) Other wireless routers in your area.

This appears to happen more with the draft versions of the 802.11n
wireless network routers. I have a Draft N router myself have also
get these access problems now and then.

What do you mean by "access the modem"? You have no internet access or you
can't access the administration interface? can you ping it? Have you
rebooted the modem? was this modem/router provided by your ISP?

"I can't access the admin page"

What is the routers local IP? How are you trying to access it? does the
login page come up, do you get a not found error?

I have encountered this sometimes. Not sure why but usually a power
cycle (take to power out of the router, wait a few minutes and then
put the power back) would fix this.

If you can ping and Acess the Router/Modem page then try to Power Down the
Router /Modem and wait for a minute or so and also the PC/Laptop connected
to it.
Power UP the Router/Modem and wait for a minute then Power the PC/Laptop
connected to it. Now are you able to connect?

If the above didn't help try to open your browser and type in:
http://192.168.0.1 Hit Enter on your keybard.
Did you get the Modem Webpage?
Try to go through the setting again or it may be need you to enter the
Password only.

I rebooted the router which I have done in the past when I encountered
the same problem and everything is fixed now. I have upgraded the firmware.
But why did this happen in the 1st p-lace? This is a very rare problem so
I will probably just live with it. It is frustrating though.

I forgot to mention this in my 1st reply to your post. I had to pull the
Power Plug
to reboot the modem/router because as I stated in my 1st post I could not
access
the modem/router(by that I mean the admin page).

Static electricity is the usual explanation. I have had to cycle power on
quite a few devices - DSL modem, AV receiver, Directv Modem, and even a
Mitsubishi big screen TV.
On most of them, you need to unplug the device from the convenience outlet
to get the power down to really clear the device.

Well to answer your question about why this happeneing and whay the power
down solve the problem as follow;
- The Problem resemble in Software and hardware, right?
# Software can be damaged or corrupted due to many reasons like:
- Malware infested the machine and the modem driver
- The driver itself over the time got damaged
- The lack of updates to the firmware and some security software can
contribute the intermittent or the loose of connection.
- Misonfiguring. By tuning your Connection and secure it by assigning a
unique SSID and Encryption method and also a different channel other than the
one the whole neighborhood using it or other Wireless devices like Radios,
Mobile mast.
-Loose of signal due to some perephirals like cordless phone base unit, a
satellite digibox, mobile phones and fax machine and some alarm systems.
...etc.
Hardware:
- Defective chip after a while.
- Overheating

You need to access the Modem Wepage and run the Wizard and set an encryption
medthod (Preferably WPA-PSK) instead of the WEP Key.

Try on all PC s to access the Modem/Router page.

I will chalk it up to overheating or unexplained and I have 2 choices ; call
Qwest
and demand a replacement because the modem is defective, or just live with
it since it
occurs rarely. One salient point is my warranty on the modem ends this month.

J

Jack \(MVP-Networking\).

Hi
If the warranty is about to expire call and complain.
Wireless connections might need at time changes in security settings and
thus you need an access to the Wireless part of the Modem/Router.
Jack (MS, MVP-Networking)
