cannot access web via dns - need to use IP addr

I cannot access web via dns - need to enter an IP address
to get to any page. I installed a larger hard drive 1
year ago by ghosting the old drive to new. I hooked the
old drive back up and have no problem with it. I backed
up critical files and would like to reformat the new
drive and reinstall XP (the info I find in help and
support indicates you can not format a system drive, so
I'm not sure how to proceed).
I appreciate any help or insight with this problem.

How do you access the Internet, by dial-up, broadband?
Usually, you should receive the DNS servers by your
Internet Service Provider.

Make sure that you have them set correctly. To verify
which dns server you use, go start, run, type cmd
In the dos windows, type "ipconfig /all" and you will see
them.

did you install any firewall? Make sure that DNS request
can get it through.

For your format, you can reformat your disk but you'll
lose all the data on it. If you have backed up your data,
you can do it so during the installation of XP

Hope this help

How do you access the internet? are you using a dial up modem, broadband
etc? Are you using a hardware router/firewall?
When you run ipconfig /all from a command prompt, what values does it return
for the DNS server ip addresses?
Is your pc configured with a static IP address in network settings? If so
then you also need to manually add the DNS server IP addresses to TCP
properties. You'll have a better idea than me where to get that information
from.

When you install xp, it offers you the option to reformat as part of the
installation. You boot up using the xp cd and follow the prompts.
The help file probably means you can't reformat the boot/system drive while
windows is up and running.

I use DSL and my provider could not resolve the issue.
I've been backing my stuff up and I think I'll reformat.
THANKS VERY MUCH!!!
