Cannot access MSOutlook Express

When attempting to access MSOutlook Express I get the password prompt. After
entering the password another window comes up and states that it is trying to
connect me to Outlook but it just keeps 'thinking' and never connects me.
Last attempt was last night, and it is still 'thinking'. It shows I have 78
unread emails in the box, as it's been over a month since I have been able to
access.
Please advise. Thanks
