Cannot access internet in Safe Mode

After my computer (Windows XP) crashed, I sent an error report to microsoft.
Once teh error report had been sent the computer told me to solve the
problem, I was to restart my computer in "Safe Mode with Networking", go to
http://safety.live.com, scan the computer and that would remove the virus (I
believe to be a Trojan Horse). However, when I restarted my computer in safe
mode with networking, my PC could not connect to the internet. The
connections folder was empty.

Will someone please tell me what I am doing wrong?

Thanks in advance.

Stay away from Windows Live Safety Center, it's in Beta, which means that it
is not ready for prime time.

Trying to access the internet in Safe Mode with Networking is not a very
safe thing to try to do. Your firewall and antivirus software may not work
and you are liable to get even more nasties than what you're trying to get
rid of.

Safe Mode is a special diagnostic mode of windows enables you to fix a
problem which may be caused by your network or hardware
settings. In safe mode, you have access to only basic files and drivers
(mouse, monitor, keyboard, mass storage, base video, default system
services), just the minimum device drivers required to start Windows.

Safe Mode with Networking uses a minimal set of device drivers and services
to start Windows together with the drivers that you must have to load
networking. I don't know this for sure, but I think Safe Mode with
Networking was intended for starting a machine that is on a network, not for
accessing the internet.

Well why would Microsoft tell me to do that?

I have AVG Free and that is not detecting the virus.

Is there any other way that I can delete this trojan?

I have no earthly idea, because it is poor advice. I have seen a lot of
posts related to Safe Mode with Networking and Windows Live Safety Center.
I have AVG Free and that is not detecting the virus.

Is AVG up to date?

AVG Free Edition
Program version: 7.1.375
Virus base: 267.14.21/236
Release date: 1/20/06

A trojan is not a virus and antivirus software may not detect or even be
able to remove the trojan.
Is there any other way that I can delete this trojan?

What trojan, does it have a name?

if you have a second partition or drive, try install Xp on that and install
AV and Sp2 from safe disk.

you can then use free scanners to try eliminate problems.

I generally use a least power user for internet and downloading.
consequently, I have very few nasty bugs that I can't get rid of by
rebooting and updating my security software's
