cannot access 180GB HD

Hi,

I have a Sony VAIO RX860 PC and purchased a Deskstar
180GB 2nd HD. WinXP sees the HD in Device Manager only.
The drivers are installed, the Bios recognizes the
correct 185GB capacity, but WinXP does not assign drive
letter and shows the drive in explorer.

Any suggestions anyone, before I return the drive and
settle for a smaller HD?

Thank you for your attention and assistance.

Right click on My Computer and select Manage. On the following screen,
doubleclick on Disk Management.

It should now appear on the right hand side of the screen, from where you
can partition and format the drive and assign it a drive letter.

Do not forget to update Windows XP with SP1, big hard drive support info and
make sure the BIOS can handle LBA 48 bits mode.
