Can you use mike jack in lieu of line-in jack on laptop?

We have a new laptop which doesn't have a line-in jack. It does however
have a microphone jack. Should it be possible to record from either a
minidisk player or cassette player using this jack once I install the proper
software?

Not really, the "mic" jack differs from a 'line in" by virtue of a 'bias"
feed for microphone power. While analog audio may be input into this jack,
there will be feedback noise and degradation of sound, and it will put a
strain on applicable transistors.
