Can you install one HD on a Raid channel?

I just bought a P4C800-E-D and I'm reading the manual. I understand the Raid
arrays, but I'm not doing that now. I will have one IDE Ultra ATA100 HDD on
this system to start. The manual is unclear on my options for this drive. It
would be nice to leave all the ATAPI drives (3) on the primary and secondary
IDE channels and have the one HDD on the Raid channel. But it seems from the
manual that the drives have to be installed in pairs.
Can you put one HDD on the PRI_RAID controller as the only HD drive on the
system?

Its actually pretty simple... The mobo has 4 SATA connectors, two for RAID
disks, and two for NONRAID, so for a single SATA disk just use one of the
two nonRAID connectors, think they are the two closest to the front panel
pinbank. When you decide to go raid, simply add another drive and then plug
both drives into the two RAID SATA connectors. There are also three IDE
connectors, one is blue and mounted in edge of mobo, its used for first disk
in IDERAID, and the other blue IDE connector is for secondary disk in
IDERAID, The other blue connector also doubles as primary channel IDE, so
you could plug one optical drive into that one, one optical drive into
secondary IDE (grey) and your hard drive into RAID and have best possible
transfer speeds between all drives (two optical drives on same channel may
look like they are operating simultaneously, but its actually only working
one at a time, with each drive on its own channel they truly are operating
simultaneously). Then lets not forget the lowly FDD connector, sure be nice
with MS ditches the need for it, haven't used one in MONTHS, and even then
it was to fdisk an old computer, install CDROM dos drivers, and install
win98se.....

Thanks to both. Sounds like an old dog has to learn a new trick! Moving away
from the 2 channels-4 devices mindset is disorientating! But I'll have fun
with it (eventually!). When the prices for SATA drives moves more into the
mainstream and away from the case modders market I'll look into doing that.

Take a look at newegg.com.... I actually got my SATA WD120GB drive for LESS
than the same drive in the IDE variant!! (OEM nonRefurb)

Then we're almost there! I got my 120 IDE for $66 in retail box with
rebates. Couldn't pass it up. Wasn't ready to play with RAID arrays yet
anyway. Wanted to learn something first. Now that I'm getting edge-icated, I
think I see where I want to go with it. Maybe in the summer.
Thanks again.
