Can You Download XP Fax Software?

My church donated me a computer running Windows XP. It came with all
the Office 2003 programs installed; the church was upgrading its
computer lab for after-school programs.

Anyway, apparently they got the computer from a government agency.
For a reason I can't figure out, there is no FAX capability on this
machine. Whenever I try to ADD COMPONENTS, I get the message box
requesting the Installation CD, which I don't possess.

All I want to know is if there is a site where someone with a donated
computer can download legally the Fax component. Thank you.

To make the transfer legal, the church must give you the
WinXP CD and the product key. Best to get them now - sooner
or later you will need them for something essential.

AFAIK, there is no site from which you can d'l these files. However, if
the computer is one that had Windows XP pre-installed by the
manufacturer, the files may be on the hard drive in C:\i386. See

Alternatively, any Windows XP CD should do -- if you don't have one,
perhaps you can borrow one. Insert the CD, Exit from the install
screen, and then add the fax component from add/remove windows components.

While you're at the page linked above, read the rest of the FAX FAQ.

I would just buy a more reliable FAX program such as "Mighty
FAX" or similar program. The MS FAX prgm is not great by any
stretch of the imagination. SuperVoice also works fine using its
FAX function.

Thank you all so much! I read the link and realized that this
computer did not come with a modem, either, so there was no reason to
support analog phone connections.

Not only that, but from your posts, I realized that the software that
came with my modem *supposedly* supports faxing. If I can only figure
out what went wrong there...

Again, thank you.
