Can the XBox 360 wireless controller work in XP with a Charge & Pl

I realize the hardware is different for both, but could the xbox 360
wireless controller, when connected to the USB port of a PC via a charge and
play connector, work? I've tried plugging it in and it comes back as an
"Unknown USB" device.

Is there a driver for this somewhere to support it, or if not, why could it
not be done?

Thanks.

It doesn't actually connect via USB, nothing more than the battery is
basically connected. Even when charging it is connected wirelessly.

However Microsoft have recently released a USB wireless receiver that will
work with all wireless Xbox 360 accessories.

It's on Amazon.com, I can't see it listed on Amazon.co.uk yet so it might be
a few more weeks in Europe.
