Now that I've got your attention, here's the situation:

When I try to import data tables in Excel into Access I get the following
error message: "The wizard is unable to access information in the file
[filepath]. Please check that the file exists and is in the correct format."

So far as I can tell, this is a very rare issue because (1) I've checked
news groups for this error and have come up with nothing, and (2) I've posted
this question in this news group twice before in the past week and have had
no response from anyone. Doing some research @ support.microsoft.com, I came

I'm using MS Office 2003 on Windows XP, 3.5 gb of RAM on a XEON dual
processor machine. Suffice it to say I don't think RAM or processor speed is
an issue here.

Also, the data in the Excel table is structured very preceisely, and imports
into Access 2000 without any problems. This problem is isolated to Access
2003.

So, therein lies the challenge to some intrepid Access expert. I await your
response.

You are always much better off to use a better subject line...many peole who
may have an acutal answer for you are likey to skip over this quiestion due
to the subject matter. (just a hint for hte future...but, you might have
alreayd missed someone who could have given you an answer).

I did not see the other posts, but a a few more deatls would have helped..

For example, can you other excel files, but not a pariclar one?

Is a network, or file permssions involved here? (in other words, is the file
on your local hard drive?).

Can you open/use the excel sheet on your local machine without problems?

Hi,

Thanks for the response. I can't import any excel files. The issue occurs
whether I try to access the file over a network or locally. There are no
file permissions, as I created the Excel documents in question.

Well unfortunately I can't do that because I'm not an administrator on the
machine. My company's IT department claims the registry is not the issue.
So, either they are wrong or MSFT is wrong.

According to the article you cited:

SYMPTOMS
When you import files, export files, or link files in Access, some
file types are missing from the Files of type drop-down box in the
Import dialog box ,

So when you try to use the import wizard and you look at the "Files of
type:" drop-down box; is "Microsoft Excel(*.xls)" on of the choices?

If it's not there, I would go back to the IT department, show them the
article and demand they fix it. (Yeah, like "demanding" anything from
an IT dept. ever accomplished anything.)

If Excel IS on the list, I'd say the registry is probably not the
problem.

Thanks, I agree with you. Seems the logical solution would be for the IT
department just to reinstall everything.

"Logic" and "IT department" don't mix, apparently.
