Can,t upgrade from IE 5.0 to IE 6.0

Al

I have downloaded the Internet Explorer 6.0 upgrade many
times, each time I go to open the setup and start
upgrading a box will open saying I am unable to upgrade,
try closing all open applications and try set up again, I
would hit, Ctrl-Alt-Delete and make sure that the only
things running would be, Explorer and Systray and I will
still get the same error message. Is there some way for me
to get by this error and get IE 6.0 installed? If anyone
has any ideas about this or has had the same thing happen
to them, please e-mail ne at my address above,
fastguy4u2001@yahoo,com as soon as you could. As for system
specs, I have a HP Pavilion Pentium III running Windows
98SE and has Internet Explorer 5.0 installed at this time,
I have 192mb of RAM installed also. I have 6.0 on my other
computers and like the way it runs much better than the IE
5.0. So Please, anyone reading this message and has some
idea of what it is I'm to do to get my IE 5.0 upgraded to
6.0 e-mail me.I have read through all the info I could
find in the Question-Answer areas on this website and
never found any answers that would help me out. Thanks for
reading this, and if I get any kind help from you at all,
maybe then I could repay the favor back by helping you
with an answer to a question you might have. And yes, I
have considered the idea of totally erasing the hard drive
and reinstalling Windows 98SE and trying to go from there
but even though I have almost everything on the drive
backed up on CD's, I still would rather not have to mess
with all the reinstalling of all the drivers and programs
again, if you know what I mean. Hope to hear from someone
real soon...

I had IE6 on my computer and it worked properly but I had a corrupt
KERNEL32.DLL file, I tried to correct through MS Downloads, recommended
reinstall Windows ME.

After doing this I tried to open Quick Books, I got the message, "can not
find IE6, it is required to run QB 2004."

I tried to reinstall IE6 from CD, I got the message, "all components were
not installed, close all programs and try again." I did this several times
with no luck. I then downloaded IE6 from MS - - - NO LUCK. I have contacted
MS explaining the issue - - - NO Reply.

If someone has passed something along to you that has helped I would deeply
appreciate the info.

E-mail A: (e-mail address removed)

Thanks

Hi Al :)

At this point you may have what MS MVP Noel Paton calls 'version soup',
which means, you may now have a mix-up of the versions from your many
unsuccessful attempts to install IE 6.0. ;-)

I'm crossposting my reply to the microsoft.public.windowsme.general, where
Noel is a regular responder, in the event he may wish to provide additional
information on this. (Hi Noel! .....must be Saturday! <vbg>)

You should first reinstall your version of E 5.0 to make sure that you are
starting with a clean slate before attempting any more installs of the IE6.
Here are some sites that will provide information on how to repair your IE,
and how to install the IE6.

If these steps do not resolve your problem, please post back to this thread
with the details and any error messages.

Hope this helps

Hold on a minute!!

Al's using Win 98SE, not ME!! A lot of the caveats don't hold for that
version of Windows - and there may be simpler ways to get IE6 to install
properly.

Try this first.... (courtesy of Zee)

Go to My Computer - Tools - Folder Options - View:
- Select "Show hidden files and folders", click Apply - OK

Create a folder named "Old uninstall".

Go to folder C:/Program Files/Internet Explorer/Uninstall Information.

Now Edit - Select All - Cut all files.

Open "Old uninstall" folder and paste the files.

You will now be able to install all the troublesome components.

If everything works as expected, you can delete the "Old Uninstall" folder
and the files you moved.

Ahha! 'k.....wasn't sure if it worked the same or not for the IE in all or
not, that's why I wanted to be sure to drag you in too.

Your problem was different, Jan - you'd reinstalled the OS over the top
(which is really the only excuse for a full removal/reinstall).

Oh......

.......well then.......never mind... <g>

Thank you very much for you time and input. :))
