You can only activate the Ultimate version with that key.

They're all on the same disc, the product key you use determines which
version.

Hi Paul ...

Thats crazy , how can you activate vista then ?,or at least the home basic
version I have ..
Do you have to change the product key munbers somehow to determine what
version you use ?

Thanks

All of the "official"downloads and DVD ones are Ultimate.
The "key"is for ultimate
You would have to ask MS for a different key.
Whether they would give you one is different matter.

Assuming you pick the right SKU when you install (if you don't enter the
product key) then it simply activates.

Unless of course there's something going on in internet land between you and
the servers and you can't get routing to them.

The file that you have already downloaded ALREADY does contain Vista Ultimate.
Reformat you Vista partition, boot from the Vista DVD, when prompted enter
the product key you ALREADY have, and Vista Ultimate will be installed.

Hi ..

I did install this vista on a formatted hard drive , so I don`t know why it
loaded as Home basic and not ultimate ! ...
All I did was to follow the on screen instructions , so I guess if I format
my hard drive and reinstall it and put in the product key , it will load the
same way and I will be back where I am now ,not being able to activate it on
line ?
I can`t understand why it loaded as vista home basic if its the ultimate
version ?

Cheers

The DVD contains ALL versions of Vista. The only way it would have
installed Home Basic, or any other version apart from Ultimate, is if you
had installed without the product key and selected Home Basic from the
drop-down list.

If you install and input the product key when the box for so doing appears,
then Ultimate will be the version installed, as the CPP keys are all for
Ultimate.

Sorry man, If the key isn't working your are probably out of luck at this
point. Now that they have RTM'd you are unlikely to even get phone support
