Hello,
Since I upgraded to a new computer (with WinXP) a few weeks ago I've had
nothing but hackers and all sorts of nasty stuff attack my pc. I then sought
the advice of this ng and installed all sorts of "tools" to deal with these
issues. I even put in a hardware firewall. Anyway, I thought I eliminated my
problems completely BUT there was one thing remaining ... I have a cable
modem and noticed that my internet and email speed and connections were
really slow and many times just "timed out". I found the "Send" and
"Receive" lights both constantly lit on my modem and I was told, by my
service provider, that this was certainly abnormal and would indicate a
"worm" of some sort. This had been going on for a few weeks despite
constantly running and updating SpyBot, AdAware, Pc-Cillin, CWshredder etc
.... and also having a hardware firewall. Then, just today, I was told a new
"security" update was available to d/l from microsoft. When I installed it,
restarted my pc, the problem had ceased and deceased. The "Send" and
"Receive" lights work correctly now and my internet and email work quickly
and without probs. Can someone please explain this and why the above "tools"
have not remedied the problem or even found it ? How then can I prevent this
from happening again if these "tools" missed something this important ?
Thank you for your continued support,
Daniel
