Can someone explain?

I got this alert from MSAS and I allowed it because I wasn't sure what to
do. It happened while I was downloading an update to Quicken Willmaker
2005. As this is the last update I will receive on this program, it doesn't
have to contact the internet again. Should I remove this? also how without
the "dire" consequences?

What is a layered service provider?
Layered service providers are sometimes manipulated by spyware applications
known as Winsock redirectors. Layered service providers are a way to connect
a piece of software to the Winsock implementation on your computer. Because
the layered service providers are connected together, when Winsock is used,
the data is transported through each layered service provider in the chain.
Spyware can use layered service providers to view all traffic transported
over your Internet connection. You should use extreme caution when deleting
these objects, because if it is removed without properly fixing the gap in
the chain, you can lose Internet access.

Thanks in advance,

mimir :)

mimir - if you saw this alert in the course of knowingly installing a program
which makes use of the Internet (even if perhaps minimally)--I would not
worry about this alert. The Layered Service Providers can be looked at using
Tools, advanced tools, system explorers--look for Winsock LSPs.

My system shows a fairly long list of all gold stars, each of them is from
Microsoft--but it won't hurt to check there and see what is now listed, after
completion of the install.

I've seen this alert arise at times which there's no clear reason for it,
and when I am sure no malware is involved.

Thanks Bill,

That was very helpful. Mine are all from Microsoft too and a few from my
antivirus/firewall, so I guess they are fine also.

You're welcome. I think that you are in good shape. It is when such prompts
arise when you are not intending to be installing any software that you
really need to be concerned.
