I found Ghost easy to use once you realise you don't need to understand all
it's features - but the manual makes it seem horribly complex.

Drive Image is much easier to use and runs under windows.

would norton need anything to run it
is there any other software that can do this job besides these 2?

"Framework thing" ???

No, programs like Ghost/DI come with everything you need to backup and
restore.

What I use is Image for Windows - from http://www.BootitNG.com ($27
shareware - 30 day full functional trial)

That allows you to make a compressed image of a partition (using its
associated PHYlock even of the one it is running under) to either:

A File set on a separate partition

A separate device - CD or DVD. sets, including external drives on USB or
Firewire. I use DVD-R where one disk will take around 7GB or so of
original data after compression. The disks are then bootable to allow a
restore

Alex, is the Image for DOS comparable to Drive Image (latest version) or V2i
Protector Desktop Edition 2.0 as to dependability?? I have some concern
about both of these PowerQuest programs because you can only make a backup
images while in windows. I always felt more confident when Drive Image made
a backup image while in DOS. Would appreciate any comments. Thanks, Sam.

TrueImage www.acronis.com does the job for me.

Just follow the on screen prompts.

Image for Windows and the same sites Image for DOS (and his BootIT NG
which will do all the imaging, but not under windows) are compatible so
that you can make an image with one and restore with another.

Knowing the author's work, and on my own experience, I believe them to
be as reliable as any program you are going to find for this purpose. I
have made and restored images with the windows version as a fairly
routine matter, for making test copies of my XP for beta test and the
like, and have had no failures in regular use. Initially you need to
check with a test if making the image direct to DVD as it may need a
setting changed to 'alternate close method' depending on your particular
burner

Alex, many thanks for sharing your experience with the program. I will
definitely try the program in the very near future. Have a good Monday,
Sam.
