Can send but not receive - how to set incoming secure authenticati

Hi:

I'm running Office Pro 2003 fully updated, on Win XP also fully updated; DSL
wireless connection; Wireless firewall is disabled.

In setting up a new POP3 e-mail account that requires secure authentication
and SSL, I can make all the settings in Outlook for SSL with the appropriate
ports, set authentication for the outgoing mail server, but I can't find a
place to set secure authentication for the incoming mail server.

In Outlook, I can send e-mail from this account, but cannot receive e-mail
sent to this account - the network password dialog box comes up repeatedly.
(I've verified with the mail server administrator that all my settings are
correct, and also verified the password.)

At the administrator's suggestion I downloaded Mozilla Thunderbird, which
allows me to set secure authentication in general - in other words, not
limited to the outgoing mail server - and that program functions just fine,
downloading all the messages sent from Outlook when I tested the e-mail
account setup.

Any ideas?

After hearing from a tech writer friend in Outlook, the
problem may not be what I think it is. He says that by
setting the User Name and Password in the E-mail Account
dialog box, I'm establishing secure authentication.

So - maybe it's something else.

A curious development is that I've discovered that I can't
*send* mail from Mozilla Thunderbird. The reverse of the
problem I have with Outlook - the password dialog box
appears repeatedly when I attempt to send a message.

Any ideas?
