Can send but cant receive email

Using windows mail I can send email but cannot receive email any more. When
sending and receiving begins to download emails but gets to 3 and then hangs.
After a while a box then opens asking for user name and password. Then hangs
for circa 10 - 20 seconds and same box then opens asking for user name and
password again. If I select stop then error message arises -

Account: 'pop3.demon.co.uk', Server: 'pop3.demon.co.uk', Protocol: POP3,
Server Response: '-ERR [IN-USE] could not lock maildrop; is there another
connection active?', Port: 110, Secure(SSL): No, Server Error: 0x800CCC90,
Error Number: 0x800CCC92

Checked with ISP and they maintain not an issue at their side. I can access
my emails via the ISPs own webmail service.

Defnately no other connection trying to connect

Gary,

Many thanks. Deleting from webmail has freed everything up.

Cheers

Do you have Windows Mail configured to check for mail every few minutes?
Make sure that your checking interval is at least 5 minutes.

Also, you may have a 'stuck' email on the server.
Log in via webmail (using your browser), sort the messages there by date,
delete all the older ones you already have downloaded, plus one more.
Try Windows Mail again.

That problem is usually caused by interference from an
antivirus program. Which antivirus are you running?
As a minimum, email scanning in the antivirus should be turned off,
although that may not be sufficient to eliminate all bad effects.
In a worst case scenario, your antivirus may need to be uninstalled.

Email scanning in any antivirus should be disabled, for reasons
explained here:
http://thundercloud.net/infoave/tutorials/email-scanning/index.htm

If no improvement after disabling email scanning, consider upgrading
to Windows Live Mail, because it is less prone to suffering bad effects
from overly intrusive antivirus programs:

I'm using Trend Micro PC-cillin. I've had this laptop with Trend Micro
antivirus for over a year and never had a problem with my email. Then I got
a virus on 4/1 and a friend of mine removed the virus and deleted windows and
reinstalled everything. Would this have caused this problem? How does
Windows Live work? Is that web based?

Trend Micro antivirus is among the top three troublemakers for Windows Mail.
Symptoms often don't show up until an update occurs.
First, go into its settings and disable any interaction with email, then try
Windows Mail again. If no improvement, do a trial uninstall of the antivirus.

Switching to Windows Live Mail is a good alternative.
It is not webmail. Some of its options use the web (calendar sync,
contacts sync), but you don't have to use those if you don't want to.
