can receive but not send email

My computer crashed and had IT person set it up for me again. He is not too
familiar with Vista. I now have AVG anti-virus program and some responses I
have read said it could be problem with anti-virus - so does Windows mail
have a problem with AVG?
My error response I receive is:
Subject 'help', Account: 'Windows Mail', Server: 'smtp.att.yahoo.com',
Protocol: SMTP, Server Response: '250 8BITMIME', Port: 25, Secure(SSL): Yes,
Server Error: 250, Error Number: 0x800CCC7D

Under PROPERTIES: Servers neither box is checked Incoming or Outgoing for
authentication.
Under ADVANCED: Outgoing mail port number is 25 and Incoming Mail at 995
both boxes are checked for requiring a secure connection.

An IT person who is not familiar with Vista is not much of an IT person.
Anyway, this has nothing to do with Vista.
Your settings are wrong, but thanks to you including the complete
error message, the resolution is easy:
For the outgoing server, "My server requires authentication" must be
checked. On the Advanced screen, change port 25 to 465, but be sure
to keep the SSL option enabled. The complete settings are published
here: http://helpme.att.net/article.php?item=10707

Good answer - but he is also not likely to have suffered a nervous
breakdown either :)

You do a great job Gary - how do you find the time?

Thanks - I'm retired.
This tech support role keeps me mentally sharp, so it's a win-win deal. :)

But most of it's not "tech" support, is it? It's repeating the same old
thing time after time after time to those who can't or won't do any research
themselves....
I wouldn't have your patience!
As I said before, I don't recall all this stuff when Outlook Express was
first freely available....

But these groups are easier to find now aren't they? I mean it may be
only a name change to "Communities" or whatever, but it is more or less
set up in Windows Mail.

Yes I hadn't thought of that. Of course, that didn't happen in OE.

I think that's a good thing really, although ISPs could do a lot better.
Mine, Mediacom, often uses sub-contractors for installation and their
method does not generally include any kind of set up media, the techs
are always pretty good if you need help setting up, but really don't
have the time to go into detail with stuff like email etc. Therefore I
think a front page item on their website "How to set up your new email"
would be good, and a simple address to get there.

Hmm, see any help here?

or here?

Nope, not even here :)

errr, nope

Ah this must be it...

or maybe not :)

And nowadays, many more people are using laptops, away from home where they
are connected via cable...
and more ISPs are blocking port 25..

It falls under the general banner of 'tech support'.
Not all tech support is pioneering type work.
I worked as a tech support specialist for a web hosting company
for several years, and yes, most of the problem calls we got were
repetitive, but there is always that 10% or so that is challenging.

OE had its issues too, although most of the time it was just a
matter of looking up the correct settings for a specific mail server.

That's true, the port 25 blocking was not an issue years ago.
That's what I like about this business, always new issues to
conquer. It keeps me in demand. :)
