Can Read but Cannot Write

I have 2 computers, a laptop and desktop, in a network connected using a
D-Link router. The laptop is set up to access the desktop's files. The laptop
is able to read and view files located on the desktop. However the files open
up as Read-only. When I attempt to save after modifying the files, I am
forced to save the files under a different name. If I use the same name, I
get the following error message:
“Cannot save file. The folder is marked read-only.â€

I have tried going into the desktop in Safe Mode and changing the Security
settings for the folders. This did not help. Where specifically do I need to
go to change the permission settings so that files on the Desktop can be
Modified and Saved from the Laptop.

The Desktop has Windows XP Home SP 2 and the Laptop has Windows XP Home. The
Windows Firewall is turned on.

Thanks,
Pam

Pam,

Permissions problems like yours take some work when they involve XP Home.
Besides Safe Mode, you can try

Besides Safe Mode, you can try CACLS or the Security Configuration Manager.

Where exactly are the files located? Remember with Simple File Sharing, many
folders are not supposed to be accessed, and others are not supposed to be
accessed as writable, thru the network.

How do I access CALCS or the security configuration manager?

The files are within the My Documents folder on the C: drive. They are
mostly Word or Excel files.

Pam

Pam,

My Documents is private, and in XP Home isn't routinely accessible thru the
network.

So you tweak Guest (all access is by Guest permissions). CACLS / SCM is
discussed in the articles. Read the articles.
