can ping sites, but cant browse

A client of mine has 1 server and 3 workstations on a
network with a high speed connection to the internet.
Sometimes, not all the time they cannot connect to the
internet. They can allways ping websites but the browser
cannot go to the site. I have scanned for viruses, but
nothing turns up. Has anyone seen this before?

This may be also be caused by a third-party program (adware, spyware,
parasite).
Get AdAware and SpyBot and run them both. Keep them up to date.
