can only access internet in safe mode

I have a weird problem I'm hoping someone can help me with. I have a Dell
Inspiron 600m running XP Home SP1. Spybot and Norton AV found and deleted
several viruses, malware, etc. Since then, I can only connect to the internet
in the safe mode. I've released/renewed the ip and flushed the dns several
times, ran all the setup wizards, even reinstalled (upgrade) XP to no avail.
I get the same results whether I go wireless or hard wired through a router
or wired through a simple hub. I've turned startup items on and off, firewall
on and off, turned off virus scanner, etc. Everything looks ok in the normal
mode regarding ip, signal strength and all that, it just won't go on line
unless I'm in the safe mode with network support. Anyone have any ideas?
Thanks.

Honestly, you should backup what you can then do a reformat and
reinstall. Then before you add any software whatsoever, apply all
updates - including SP2. I hope you have an installation CD.

I've gone through the effort of trying to repair machines in this
condition and it's not worth it.

Tried that, no joy. I ended up blowing everything away and starting over per
Lance's suggestion. This actually turned out to be good, cause the PC was all
junked up with several years worth of stuff. A little time consuming, but now
it's like a brand new machine.

Thanks for the replies.
