can not send email 'relay access denied' error 454

i am unable to send email from my laptop form either outlook express or
outlook.
i am running xp with sp1. i bought and set up the laptop last week and for a
week or so it has been fine. however yesterday it suddenly stopped allowing
me to send emails. i receive the message below in an email which comes from
the system administrator each time i attempt to send a mail.

454 <my name>: Relay access denied

i do not need to authenticate my smtp server info and have talked to my isp
who say it is a client software problem. indeed they are right because i am
still able to use the same email account from another pc and on that machine
there are no problems sending emails.

all of my email settings are correct in the mail client.

i tried turing off virus checking for outgoing email in norton antivirus
software but that made no difference.

can anyone help??

This is a symptom of one of two things, usually. One is that, despite what
your ISP is telling you, you _do_ have to authenticate to the SMTP server.
Try it. It can't hurt and it's only one little checkox.

The other is that you're trying to send a message using an address with a
domain of xyz.com when your ISP's domain is abc.com. Most ISPs require that
the sender address use the ISP's domain.

thanks for the reply. sadly it does not help me. as i say i ahve this account
working perfectly on an older machine running win 98 se. and it was working
well on the new laptop running xp until yesterday.
i have already tried the smtp server aunthentication thing and that has not
worked.
on the second point i have been with the same isp working this way for about
three years and have never had any probs until i got hold of an xp laptop
last week.
nonetheless i appreciate your time in replying and tring to assist me.
its obviously a known issue as i have seen identical questions on paid for
bulletin boards but to which i do not have a subscription to enable me to see
the answer!

What version of Outlook are you using? What ISP? The error code being
returned (454) is not a valid error code per the SMTP standard, so it's
hard to tell what's going on - it is a *temporary* failure code, though, so
it's possible that things will just start working.

Could you turn on diagnostic logging (see
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;en-us;Q300479) and post
the OPMLog.log file (preferably as an attachment) after this happens? I'd
like to see what the exchange with the server looks like.

thanks for answering jeff. this is a problem which happens with both outlook
express and outlook 2003 on a laptop running windows xp sp1.
i activated diagnostic logging as per the instructions in the link you
provided. however i do not have the Local Settings\temp\OPMLOG.LOG files on
my computer. in my log on name directory i have cookies, favorites, my
documents and start menu and its not in any of these. Also when i search for
the OPMLOG.LOG file I am unable to find it on the C drive. I went through the
steps in the link and restarted Outlook and then sent a mail.
Any thoughts?

in the meantime jeff i picked up this thread from google answers and some of
the same issues seem to be encountered here.

i have already turned off my norton outgoing email scanning as a possible
cause and it had not effect. however might i have downloaded all or elements
of sp2 in the background which may have brought in a software firewall onto
my machine?

Local Settings is a hidden folder. You have to select the Advanced Options
in search and enable searching hidden files and folders.
