Can not ping to local IP address

This is a strange problem.

My winXP (home edition) computer's connection to comcast worked fine until I
had a brief power outage (in about 1 sec) a couple of days ago. After the
power outage, I noticed that I can ping web sites by IP addresses but not by
names. The nslookup works fine with both IP and names. I tried a number of
things without any luck.

Lately, I notice that can ping the default gateway, but can not ping to the
IP address assigned by the DHCP server (comcast or a borrowed router).
However, ping to localhost (127.0.0.1) works fine.

Initially I thought it was something wrong with the winsock, I followed the
steps listed in KB 811259, but it did not help. I also ran winsockFix with no
luck.

I also tried reinstall the NIC driver, but it did not help either. The
routing table seems ok (route print).

I went through quite a few tasks listed in KB314067 but nothing seems to help.

Any tips to my connection problem will be appreciated.

Actually, the machine is not connected to any router. I borrowed a route to
isolate the problem which appears to be the problem with the machine, not the
comcast.

BTW, the internet firewall is not enabled.

I will try the tip later. Could it be a hardward problem? for example, the
broken NIC?
