Can not join a domain

I have never experienced this problem b-4. Trying to
join a Windows Nt 4.0 server domain with Windows XP Pro,
(on a laptop). The following is the error I get: "The
following error occurred attempting to join the
domain "XXX": Incorrect function." On the XP machine it
is using a static ip address, gateway, DNS (2) and wins
(to the NT 4.0 server). IP addressing and computer name
is unique. I can get on-line, ping the server and other
computers on the network (by ip and name). The standard
pop-up for a user with the privledge to join a machine to
the domain comes up, then I get the above message. All
computers have the most recent SP's except XP SP 2. I've
tried adding the client machine name manualy to the
servers list - still nothing. Tried creating a work
group with the same domain name - that is ok, but a
message comes back "not authorized" to open the workgroup
icon.

LOST - ANY IDEADS WOULD BE APPRECIATED

Thanks
John
