can not connect to other xp computer

Hello
We have 2 computers each running XP Pro and each with it's own cable
connection. Seperate cables, modems etc. Since each has it's own internet
connection we have not networked them. Each works fine on it's own.
However, when either one of us tries to access the others ftp server we are
unable to connect. These ftp servers were set up just for us to share files
as we were advised not to network for security reasons. Others can connect
to the ftp servers without any problems at all.
Also, one of us is running a direct connect hub. Other users can connect to
the hub. I can connect to other hubs. The other computer can connect to
other hubs but it can not connect to my hub. strange?
We use the same isp, with dynamic ip's via the isp's dhcp server. Although
the ip's rarely change. We are assigned the same gateway and dhcp server.
Any ideas? I'm stumped on this one.......
Thanks
Suzanne

Suzanne,

please have a look at http://www.michna.com/kb/WxCable.htm
first. Perhaps it points you in a good direction, then you can
ask more specific questions here.

If your two computers are physically near each other, a good
idea could be to buy a cheap WAN router like the DrayTek Vigor
2200E or, if you have low load and low demands, the even cheaper
SMC 7004 VBR. Then you would share one cable connection and have
one internal LAN (Local Area Network) by plugging both computers
into that router, using its NAT (Network Address Translation)
feature.

But there are other possible solutions.
