can not connect through outlook, lower right hand side always say

cant seem to connect to e-mail server. My internet connection is fine. The
lower right hand corner says disconnected, when I hit send/recieve, nothing
happens.
HELP!

Version of Outlook?
Email environment - POP3, Exchange?
Any error messages and/or numbers?
Do you use a PST? If you do, how big is it?
Does Outlook have a profile configured for it to use?
