windows XP sp1 using AOL 8 and IE6

computer dials up and connects to internet but will not browse internet thry
both AOL8 and IE6 recive a page can not be displayed message. I can ping IP
addresses but can not ping a web address (www.msn.com)it give me an error
about the address is wrong check spelling and try again

I have deleted winsock and winsock2 in the reg and reinstall TCP/IP for the
NIC for some reason AOL dialup does not show in network connections.

if you try to set up a new dial up connection thru the network connection
wizzard, select create a connetion, connect to internet, set up manualy
"connect using dial-up modem" is grayed out. I have uninstalled the modem and
reinstalled it. I have ran SFC (system file checker) no errors

Hi Wayne, not sure where you are in the world but in the UK you cannot
manually create a connection for AOL. It MUST be done from one of their
CD's. This is because they are an Internet CONTENT provider, not a service
provider, as I understand it you connect to AOL via a VPN connection not a
dial up connection. Hope this helps and I stand to be corrected by anyone
that knows better than I.

Regards

Adrian.

I was not trying to create another AOL dial up just a normal dial up for
testing I do not belive this to be an issue with AOL or the modem I belive
this to be a windows issue

More than likely, the culprit is AOL. Dump AOL, reformat your computer and
get a real ISP and you and your computer will be much happier and, yes, to
get all the AOL garbage off your computer, you *will* have to reformat.

No I am trying to create a dial up connection to connect to another ISP to
test. This is not an AOL issue this is an issue with the TCP/IP protocal not
working correctly

Try connecting to a completely new website you have never used before.

I have experienced problems before when I have switched internet connections
and found that there seem to be registry entries that relate to particular
sites and expect you to use the same connection to reach them as you did last
time. If the above works, suggest you search for the failing urls in your
registry and it should be evident which entries to delete.

I have tried more than a few different websites.

I know this is not a place or venue to slam people but "alias" for the last
time this is not an AOL issue and I dont care about your dislike of AOl. This
is a customers computer and can be fixed with a cure that can be done in 5
minutes instead of an hour.

If you do not have a tecnical answer, question or fix dont waste peoples time.

Really? I think more than five minutes has passed and you haven't fixed it
yet, have you?

Suit yourself but I still maintain that AOSmell is the *technical* problem;
removing AOSmell and reformating *will* solve the problem; and, you can
stick your uninformed moral lecture where the sun don't shine if you don't
like it and it isn't a matter of liking or not liking AOSmell and how they
take over your computer. It's just a fact that they do.

Hi Wayne,

Winsock Fix (Line 349):

Dial-Up Modem or PPPoE is Unavailable (Line 87)

To use the Regedit: Save the REG File to your hard disk. Double click it
and answer yes to the import prompt. REG files can be viewed in Notepad by
right clicking on the file and selecting Edit.

In addition, run this combo. Good luck!

Run Ad-Aware SE, Spybot and HijackThis:
