Can not access shared folders

P

Philip

I have 2 xp-pro laptops that are join to a
Domain "ABC.com". When the 2 laptops are on a site
office, they are just hooked up to a router with no access
to domain servers(except through VPN). The 2 labtops can
see each other on the LAN, but can not access the shared
folders on either. I am guessing it is because of the
login credentials/authentications. I have tried adding
a "guest" local user account on the laptops and accessing
it with that user id and password. Nothing works right
now. Can anyone help me with this problem?

Thanks,
Philip

You guess is correct assuming that the share access is
being attempted with domain account. The sharing-out
machine is not able to contract domain control so that the
presented credentials may be authenticated, so it does the
safe (an only logical) thing - saying "I do not know who
you are and so go away".

You could define machine local account and have them
use this for the remote connection when offsite. You could
make this account only have the Log on over the network
but not the Log on locally user rights to make sure that they
still log in with the cached domain credentials.
