CAN NOT ACCESS HD

I HAVE WIN XP PRO. WOKE UP THIS AM AND GOT
THIS ERROR MESSAGE:
WINDOWS COULD NOT START BECAUSE THE FOLLOWING
FILE IS MISSING OR CORRUPT.

"\WINDOWS\SYSTEM32\CONFIG\SYSTEM"

I DONT WANT TO HAVE GO BACK AND TAKE TIME
PLUS LOOSE SOME DATA BY DOING A FORMAT AND
STARTING ALL OVER AGAIN.

I CAN USE A WIN 98SE BOOT DISK TO START THE
PC, BUT CANNOT ACCESS THE HD (C:\) BECAUSE
IT IS NOT THE OLD FORMAT.

I have a similar issue..I got a virus in my system tried to reinstal
over the OS since after running the virus fixes the symptoms were stil
occurring yet the virus charateristic of the error was not found on th
PC...I need to get to the HD to get my files as I prefer not to loos
them...I can use a WIN 98SE boot disk to start the system but canno
access the HD (C:\)because it is not the old format as well.Can yo
give me any suggestions you may have found out? Thank you....Sorry I d
