Hi,
I purchased a new Motherboard (865g chipset with a 82801eb Ultra ATA
Controller) and CPU to upgrade my computer. I am running Windows 2000 PE. I
assumed I could plug in my two hard drives and everything would work fine.
This was not the case. Initially I recieved a boot error on my primary hard
drive stating it was inaccessable. I could see the files system, and ended
up reinstalling Windows 2000 ontop of itself. This made the MasterDrive
usable.
But I could not see the Slave drive. (Master is a 120gig Seagate) The Slave
is a 200 gig Western Digital. Windows assigned the drive a letter (D
and
it is recognized in the Bios. I enabled 48 bit LBA with the Service pack /
registry. The slave drive is NTFS. It was working fine previously. I
checked the cabled and Jumpers in every combination. When I click on the D:
(Slave) Drive it asks me to format it.
The Partition shows up and is the right size and marked NTFS but nothing
seems to be able to access the data including partition viewer tools. I
tried Active @ Partition Recovery with gave me an error stating it was
unrecognizable. Which makes me think maybe the MBR is messed up, But the
Western Digital Data Lifeguard shows there is a partition of the right size.
I can't tell if it is the MBR, Partition Table, or the File System itself is
damanged, and I can't fathom how it would have gotten damaged in the first
place. I ran GetDataBack Demo last night (took about 4 hours) To see what is
recoverable. While is finds most of the directories, most of them only have
2-3 files in them. The data is mostly MP3's and Jpegs. There was a lot of
software installed on this drive, but that I can reinstall. However the
recovery program wasn't acceptable. Not enough of the data showed up, for it
to be worth 70$ to buy it. SO much was missing. And I simply want to get
this drive working. There is no reason for it to be broken.
I emailed Western Digital, They said to run intel application accelerator
with enables Ultra ATA Support. They basically said to search for recovery
tools on the internet, and int he knowleadge base on there site they say it
is a Windows issue and to check the Microsoft website. Not very helpful. I
also tried putting the slave drive on a secondary controller but the problem
was the same. I also tried Active NTFS from Dos, and Mounting the drive as
an NTFS Volume under Linux neither of which were able to mount the drive.
I also ran the Western Digital DL Diagnostic which says the drive is fine.
So far I have only tried non-destructive measures, becasue I want windows to
see the drive as it did last week prior to the upgrade. And I don't
understand why it doesn't or what would have caused any damage. I want to be
able to do a full recovery (such as copying the data once it is viewable
completely intact) and don't want to try any destructive measures Unless I
know they will work.
Also, I gave my old Motherboard and CPU to my sister with her old
hard-drive. I did try to put this drive in that system as a slave to see if
it would work. It was not accessable.
I think that is about everything I did, its been a few days so I tried alot.
Any Suggestions?

Question
Why can't I access the data on my slave drive after reinstalling Windows
2000 or XP on the master drive?
Answer
This issue is related to the operating system and is beyond the basic
level of support offered by Western Digital. Because this is a Windows
operating system issue, please contact Microsoft for technical support on
this issue after verifying that you have installed and jumpered all of your
IDE devices correctly.
