Hi,
We (two 10 yr old students) and myself (58), just put together a box at
school on an MSI KT6V-LSR mb with an Athlon XP -2700 cpu. I videotaped them
doing this so we could make a DVD of the process.
We used the AMD stock HSF and a stick of Viking DDR 2100, 256 mb RAM. The
temps on this showed the cpu running quite high, at 52 deg (case open). C
without any OS installed. The fan speed was running at about 2800 rpm. The
next day I decided to change HSF fans for a Thermaltake Volcano that I had
as a spare. I cleaned the the cpu, put a bit of Radio Shack cpu grease on it
and installed the fan. The temps went down to about 46 deg. C and the fan
ran at 4800 rpm.
After installing XP I noticed that the temp had shot up to 58 deg C (case
open). It's been staying there and the box seems stable, but I'm wondering
if perhaps changing the RAM might have a bearing on how the cpu temp is.
I've put together a couple of dozen AMD boxes and the highest the temps go
is maybe 48 deg. C. This is an anomoly to me. Is there anything else I might
try?
Thanks,
