Will there be a compatibility issue if I transfer files from both laptop and
desktop machines to the same external hard drive? Mine is an ION TriSelect,
which works perfectly for desktop, but I'm not sure if it would would be
compatible with a laptop.
Please advise, thank you.

You need to ask the laptop manufacturer about possible compatibility issues.

ADA,

Sure, no problem. That's what external drives are all about. They
provide a means for sharing data between computers of all kinds as well
as providing a storage medium for archived data.

Depending on the Operating System (OS) that you are using, you might be
able to simply plug in and go - that works for Windows XP, 2000, and ME.
Windows 98 and W98 SE require a driver be installed prior to use.

Lastly, most externals are USB 2.0 and some are Firewire capable. These
drives will work with non-USB 2.0 systems but at the reduced speed of
USB 1.1 which is quite slower.
