Can I use Microsoft Media Center Remote Control in XP?

I recently bought a Microsoft Media Center remote control because I was
thinking of building a MCE machine. But I've changed my mind (temporarily at
least).

Can I use the remote in XP? I know that it controls some functions (such as
Media Player) but can I reprogram it so that it works in other programs?

It will certainly control the basics, play, stop, volume etc. So far as I
am aware you can not reprogram it but some controls such as volume may still
work.
