I got the multilingual Version of Microsoft Windows XP Professional SP2
UI (EN) SB and wanted to upgrade my Windows 2000 Professional. Instead
it did a fresh install and I have to reinstall all programms.

Are there switshes to make this version do an upgrade?

I noticed it created a new WINDOWS folder and left the WINNT folder
untouched. Would it help to tell it to install into that folder?

Thanks for any help.

Happy New Year to All...

Kind regards,

Frank

Was it an OEM or RETAIL version? (Was it cheaper than you expected to pay
and it came with no more than maybe a cellophan wrapped cardboard backing
and no nice box, etc?)

If OEM - it can only be used for CLEAN INSTALLS.
If Retail - it can upgrade, clean install, etc.

Frank,

In addition to Shenan's question to you.

If it is Retail version you can do what you need to.

You need to select "UPGRADE" to integrate it with prior OS. You apparently
selected a parallel install the first time.
One of the best ways to do what you need to is to boot into the old OS,
insert the CD and choose Upgrade from there. This will preserve your prior
installed applications and most of your personalized settings.

Thanks for the reply.

Apparently I used an OEM version, but I also have a retail version. The
problem is, I can't boot into the old OS, because it was damaged.
Windows Explorer kept crashing. I have two recent backups of the whole
drive and don't mind experimenting. In the long run I don't mind
rebuilding everything, but there were some programs (like my old GL SW)
that I can't reinstall, because of missing service packs.

Should I uninstall this XP and upgrade with the other one? What is my
best bet?

Uninstalling is not likely to help if you install over an underlying corrupt
OS. One key to "upgrades" is that if you start with an unstable system, the
upgrade may also become unstable.

I don't know what GL SW is, but you might see if you can obtain whatever you
need to make this work (from mfr?) and then do a complete new installation.
