can I upgrade a dead windows 2000 to xp

win2k on my machines is dead with an error ready
c:\winnt\system32\config\system and I have no back up of the registry
file. I wonder If I can fix this by upgrading to win XP? If so, then
how? If I boot the XP disk I do not get an upgrade option and I could
not boot up W2K at all. I want to avoid reinstalling all my apps if
possible.

thanks

Attempting to upgrade a problematic OS is almost guaranteed to
cause more problems than it cures; especially if the problem lies in
the registry.

Sounds like you are doomed to reformat your hard drives and start over,
