I have a teenage daughter who will not switch her computer off, and it up to
all hours. Is there anyway i can time the computer, to shut down at a
certain time. I would be grateful for any help. Thanks

You could use the Task Scheduler (visible in the Control Panel)
to schedule shutdown.exe at a given time, preferably with a
lead time of 10 minutes or so (-t 600).

To prevent her from restarting the PC, you could schedule a
similar job to run every 5 minutes between the hours of 11pm
and 7am.

You would have to make sure that her account privileges prevent
her from tampering with these jobs or from deleting files in the
c:\Windows\Tasks or c:\Windows\system32 folder.

There is an overall issue of parental control here. If you
implement the above measures then you risk starting a cat
and mouse game. Depending on her resources, she might
well outsmart you. It's like fitting locks to certain rooms in
the house. She might, in fact, be one step ahead of you and
read this note! A far better way would be to apply appropriate
parental control methods to influence her. There are countless
books on the subject.

I'm still trying to have my teens shut off the lights when they leave a
room for good.

I want the "good old days" back, when kids had to work and turn in their
paychecks to the parents so they could pay the bills :)

Darn child labor laws.... BG/JK

Set the rules. If not followed. Take the pc away for a week.

You can do this as other posts show, but why? The computer almost
certainly goes into standby mode when not in use, and uses very little
electricity when in that state. It's not worth having a cow over.

If you are concerned about her leaving the computer on after she goes to
bed, set shutdown or hibernate to occur after some period of inactivity.

If you are concerned about her staying up too late, use one of the other
suggestions, but don't slap her!
