Can I STOP the ~$ or .TMP files?

Is there a way to STOP Word from Creating any back up
files ? I run an Automated process and if there is an
error I trap the message but the Job continues , and it
will not produce any documents if there is an ~$.DOC
file ?

These are not backup files but working files - the operative word here being
'working'. It will not work without them.
