file permission error + leftover .tmp files in Word/Office 03

I see several folks have had similar problems but do not get any clear idea
of what is causing them of what to do about it!

Here is my situation: I am using Office 03 on a Dell laptop running Windows
SE Media Edition.

Problem #1: After using Word, and exiting the program normally, I have begun
to see leftover .tmp files in the same folders as the original/saved
documents. Why are they not being deleted properly? I am NOT using the "Save
As" function more than once for any document. Affected documents are both
Word .docs and .rtfs.

Problem #2: When working on a large Word .rtf file (so far only one document
is doing this), and periodically saving my work, suddenly the attempt to save
fails and my document is REPLACED by a ~wxxx.tmp file, while I receive an
error message indicating a permission error. (I am not on a network; I am the
sole user and administrator of my system.) Attempts to "Save as" and to
"Save" the .tmp file receive the same error message. Persistence results in
another error message, that my disk is full (I have 33 gb free on an 88 gb
hard drive.) Further persistence results in Microsoft Word closing and
sending an error report. Attempts to recover the file result in the opening
of a new Word blank 1k document. If I quit the .tmp file without saving --
the only option after a while -- I have a 1K .tmp file sitting on my drive.

This second problem has occurred three times. The first time I managed
somehow to copy the .tmp file to a CD before Word shut down, so I was able to
recover most of a manuscript I've been writing since 1996. However, the same
problem has occurred twice since then, so I'm not making much progress on
completing the manuscript!! This document has about 212,000K and has been
saved as a .rtf file.

What is causing these problems? Are they related, as seems likely? Do I need
to reinstall Word/Office 03? Do I need to save this file as an .htm file and
then back to a Word .doc or .rtf?

If anyone can provide any definitive answers, it would clearly be
appreciated by other users as well as very much so by me. Thanks!

When your temp files are retained, is Outlook still open? Do they go when
you close Outlook?

Problem 2
If you only have the one copy of a document you have been working on since
1996, then I sincerely hope that the problems have caused you to create
several backups. See http://www.gmayor.com/automatically_backup.htm for a
method of saving to more than one location.

Why are you working with RTF? Word in native doc format. You can always
create an RTF version later, should you need to.

The document may have some minor corruption. Copy and paste all of it but
the last paragraph mark into a new blank document.

Re-installing rarely achieves anything. Repair Word if you think there may
be a problem - and see
http://word.mvps.org/FAQs/AppErrors/ProbsOpeningWord.htm fora range of
trouble shooting tips.
