Hi - I recently purchased and installed XP Pro upgrade on
my laptop (upgraded from win 2000 pro) now I am
purchasing a new laptop and wish to install the xp s/w on
the new laptop and reinstate win 2000 on theold lap top
can I do this? Also I ahve the same situation with Office
2003. I upgraded the old laptop from Office 2000. Can I
undo this upgrade and install Office 2003 on the new
laptop?

Hi

Yes this is possible, but during the installation you need to insert the CD
of a full version of a previous operating system. This is to verify that you
in fact own a full license and are eligible for an upgrade version.

The EULA states that you can have the software on one machine at a time -
so, as long as you remove XP from the other laptop (you said you were going
to install 2K, so that's fine), you're free to put the OS on the other
laptop. I believe the same applies to Office, so it sounds like you're
still in accordance with the EULA. You will need to use your Win2K (or
another valid OS) disk during installation of XP to verify that you own a
previous OS, however.

As long as you are prepared to abandon/scrap the old laptop. Use of the
"upgrade" software is tied to no longer using the "qualifing" software.
In other words with "Upgrade" XP on the NEW laptop the Win2000 is ALSO
tied to the NEW laptop. You may not then install it one a second unit.
You have only ONE operating system license, not two.

You neglected to tell him that the previous operating system can NO
longer be used on the other PC.

Ah, so the old OS used for the upgrade may not be installed on a second
machine? Good to know.
