Can i open a PDF in Word

I am trying to open a PDF created in adobe acrobat professional but its just
giving me a whole list of numbers and symbols. Is there a way of opening it
up so that i can see what it is

No, not in Word. Use the free Adobe Reader application
(http://www.adobe.com/products/acrobat/readstep2.html) to see what's in it.
If the person who created the PDF has allowed it, you can use the Text tool
in the Adobe Reader to copy the content from the PDF and paste it as
editable text into a Word document.
