Can I make "folder view" the default in Windows Explorer ?

Q

QuienEs

I have XP optioned [ when booted up ] to always re-open any explorer
windows that existed at shut-down.

By the time I shut down, all my Windows Explorer windows are in
folder-view mode - that's the mode I like.

Typically there are about 6 windows.

Upon boot-up about half of them, randomly AFAIK, open w/o folder view,
the others with folder view.

Is there any way to tweak things so they ALL open in folder-view ?

TIA, QE in NJ

In Windows Explorer, go to Tools/Folder Options/General Tab and make sure that the "Use windows classic folders" option is selected.

Thanks for the suggestion Ronnie, but that was not the charm.

This copy of XP-Home has always been set for classic folders.

Just to try out your idea, I switched to "show common tasks in
folders", hit "Apply", switched back to classic folders, hit "Apply"
again and re-booted with 8 WinWxplorer windows open in
folder mode.

Two of them came up in folder mode, the other 6 NOT in folder mode.

Other suggestions from anyone would be most welcome.

Here is the basic target for opening Windows Eplorer in folder view:
C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe /n,/e,c:\

Hope this helps

When you originally open the explorer windows, are they all in folder view or do you select folder view after they are open?

Are you opening all of the explorer windows from a common shortcut
If you are using a common shortcut, then perform the following.

Right click the Windows Explorer shortcut and select Properties/Shortcut Tab. In the Target Line, copy/paste the following.

%SystemRoot%\explorer.exe /e,

Apply OK and exit.

Try to recreate the behavior.

If you want the folder pane open by default:

Control Panel -> Folder Options -> 'File Types' tab -> hilite 'Folder' -> click 'Advanced' -> hilite
'explore' -> click 'Set Default' -> 'OK' your way out.

Many thanks to everyone who helped with this question.

The folders I like to have open while using this PC are all originally
opened by "Favorites" - not from a common point.

I think I have learned that when XP shuts down, it "memorizes" the
original Favorite that opened the folder, not necessarily its view at
shut-down time.

So [ following Ronnie's and Sasha's lessons above ], I re-made my
favorite Favorites in the format:

C:\WINDOWS\explorer.exe /n,/e,D:\ABC\DEF

and that did the trick for me. Joy !!

Then along came Keith's "one-swell-foop" method which I'll have to try
out on a different PC where the favorite Favorites haven't been
re-worked yet.

Thanks again to everyone, QE in NJ

Glad this helped. Sometimes you just have to keep tweaking until you get it customized just the way you want. :)
