Can I link to Active Directory

I am blueprinting a helpdesk database and thought it would be great if
instead of recreating the wheel every time I add a computer or user to the
network I could just have a real time link to Active Directory. All the
user names are there as well as the computer names as well.

Is there a way to link Access to Active Directory?

I have heard of linking access to another db but never
have i heard (nor have i ever wanted to) linking to a
directory. what happens when the active directory becomes
inactive?!?!?
