Can I Install OfficeXP on a 2nd Computer?

The desktop computer I've had for a couple years came with MS OfficeXP. Now
I'm looking to buy a used laptop, mainly so I can do work on it using Excel.
Some of the laptops for sale on Craigslist do not have MSOffice installed,
and have older versions of Windows. If I buy a laptop without MSOffice, am I
able to install the version of MS OfficeXP thats on the CD that originally
came with my desktop, or am I only able to install that on my original
computer? I have the same question about WindowsXP. Can I install my
WindowsXP onto a 2nd computer?

Office: You should be able to install and use it on ONE (but any) computer
no sweat. The license doesn't allow it to be on both machines at the same
time in general. Read the agreement; it's explained fairly well.

XP:
If it came preinstalled with the computer, it cannot be used on any other
computer.

If it's on a CD you purchased at retail, you can run it on any single
computer. Worst can happen is you might have to make a short phone call to
activate it instead of being able to do so online but that's not a problem.

There are always exceptions, so ifyou have other questions, feel free.

No, you can't. You gotta buy it. The rule is one per computer.

If you have a retail license for Office XP, then its EULA permits you
to install it on one desktop computer and one portable computer, so long
as you're the owner and primary user of both computers.

However, if you have an OEM (came pre-installed on the computer)
license, you cannot do this; the OEM license is valid only for use on
the computer with which the application was purchased; further the EULA
expressly precludes transferring the license to any other computer,
under any circumstances.

Hello,

A work around for your dilema is to install OpenOffice on the second
computer. It is very good and is completely compatible with MS Office
(with a few exceptions) And it is totally free from:

Oops! Forget to answer the second question.

Based on your description, you have an OEM license for WinXP. An
OEM version must be sold with a piece of hardware (normally a
motherboard or hard rive, if not an entire PC) and is _permanently_
bound to the first PC on which it's installed. An OEM license, once
installed, is not legally transferable to another computer under _any_
circumstances.

You need to purchase a separate WinXP license for each computer on
which you install it. (As long as you have multiple identical licenses,
it doesn't matter if you use the same CD for the installations, as long
as you use a different license each time.)

Just as it has *always* been with *all* Microsoft operating
systems, it's necessary (to be in compliance with both the EULA and U.S.
copyright law http://www4.law.cornell.edu/uscode/17/117.html), if not
technically) to purchase one WinXP license for each computer on which it
is installed. (Consult an attorney versed in copyright law to determine
final applicability in your locale.) The only way in which WinXP
licensing differs from that of earlier versions of Windows is that
Microsoft has finally added a copy protection and anti-theft mechanism,
Product Activation, to prevent (or at least make more difficult)
multiple installations using a single license.

One can buy additional licenses, assuming one already has a retail
license. Naturally, Microsoft cannot sell additional OEM licenses. Be
aware, however, that you'll probably pay more this way than you would if
you were to buy a second copy of WinXP from a discount retailer;
Microsoft will only offer you a 15% discount off their MSRP.

I'll look into Openoffice. Will it allow me to easily bring home Excel
files from work, work on those files in Openoffice, then take them back to
work and continue working on them in Excel without any compatability or
formating problems?

Trevor,

Thanks for the post on OpenOffice; I've not heard of it before, and with 5
computers in my house (3 for the kids), I don't need the full MS Office for
them to do what they need to do (though it seems like OpenOffice will
anyways!)

Cheers,
Norm

The only compatibility issues I have seen have been in Open Office's
equivelent to Word called "Writer". Sometimes tables and graphics
don't always display exactly the same but never have I seen it to lose
any data. In terms of Excel...so far I've seen NO incompatibilities.

Another good option is to purchase the "Student and Teacher" version
of MS Office 2003. It allows up to three installs provided the
machines are owned by you in the same household. Also, if you happen
to be a military person or retired military person, MS has issued a
special version of Office Standard 2003 which can be installed up to
three times. Current pricing for that version at military exchanges
is $59.95. A very good bargain!
