can i force drive letter allocation ?

Hi

I just upgraded from win98 to win2000 pro and use it as standalone OS on my laptop

In addition to the internal HD, I have and external HD (USB 2.0) and an external CDRW (USB 2.0). They are both on the same hub

My problem is the drive letters of these two external devices. The CDRW always nudges in before the external HD (actually, my USB pen drive also does this...). I would like it to have a drive letter after the extenal HD. This is an issue because most of the time the CDRW is disconnected since it makes so much noise and I hardly use it, but when I connect it I don't want the drive letters for the external harddrive to change

In win98 this was not a problem. If I booted and then during usage plugged the CDRW it just put itself after the HD. Even when both were connected during boot, I found out which USB port was loaded first (I think that's why at least) and put the HD to this one and thus the CDRW would always come after in the drive letter sequence.

But in win2000 pro I am at a loss

Is there any way of specifying driveletters for the CDRW, and to hinder it from alwyas jumping in between internal HD and the external one

Thanks

/peter

You can assign drive letters for non-system, non-boot partition drives
within Disk Management snap-in
Start|Run|diskmgmt.msc
