Can I find out with which MS Office version a *.doc file was created ?

Assume I have a *.doc Word file.
Can I find out with which Word (from which Office version e.g. Word2000, Word XP, Word2003, Word2007beta)
this doc file was originally created ?

In other words: Do the Word program put some hidden editor information into the source?

It's not hidden, you have to know where to look.

Right click the *.doc file | Properties | Summary tab |
Advanced button | Look at Application Name

I.e. Microsoft Word 10.0

Application Name displays the name of the program used to create the file.

9 = Microsoft Office 2000 = Microsoft Word 2000
10 = Microsoft Office XP = Microsoft Word 2002
11 = Microsoft Office 2003 = Word 2003

Hope this helps. Let us know.
