Can I display the full shortcut names on my desktop?

Hi there

I want to show the full names that I have given to my shortcuts on Windows
XP desktop. At the moment they are cutting off at 18 characters.

Thank you.

This is a function of the number in the size of Icon Spacing showing in
Display Properties, Appearance, Advanced button, Item: scroll down the
dropdown list to Icon Spacing (Horizontal) and change it to a larger number
than the default (43) then change the Icon Spacing (Vertical) to a larger
number also. OK out and you will have more "room" to have a larger
identification for the icons. You may have to move Icons around on the
desktop since you have now given each of them more real-estate on the
desktop.

Let us know if this is what you wanted to do.

This did space the icons out more, but the shortcut names were still only
showing 18 characters. I changed both vertical and horizontal to 100, so
there was plenty of space for the names to appear.

Thank you for your suggestion - do you have any other ideas? It may just be
something I have to put up with.

Regards
J9

You shouldn't have to put up with it. On all my systems, I can create a
name for a shortcut as long as permitted in the OS which is a lot longer
than 18 characters but without it being highlighted by a single click I
can't see more than 10 characters on one line..

If you single click on the name of the icon on the desktop does it then show
the full name? If not do you perhaps have a special character in the name
(If yes to this, rename without any special characters and see if this fixes
the issue)? If the answer is no to both of these, I haven't got the
slightest idea what is happening and hopefully someone else will chime in
and help.

Hi LVTravel

Yes, I can see the full names if I single click on the shortcut, but I'm
just lazy and want to be able to see the full name without having to click
first!

Thanks for your time

J9 :)

I am surprised that when you enlarged the vertical and horizontal space it
didn't occupy the additional space. Do these names happen to not have a
space in them every so often?

"now_i_can_see_it_and_now_you_cant" would be displayed on one line while not
being highlighted but all lines if you highlight it. To enable seeing all
on multiple lines, enlarge the space and then make sure you have a space
every so often like "now_i_can see_it and_now you_cant" should display on 4
lines if the vertical spacing is at least 60 IIRC.
