can I display the date next to the time?

Is there a way to get XP professional to show the date next to the time in
the lower right hand corner (bottom toolbar)?

There is no mention of this (that I can find) in the "control panel."

(What a wonderful example of how Microsoft doesn't have a clue about basic,
everyday convenient features.)

Thanks!

Expand the Task Bar to two (or more) lines high. Or use a
third-party program, such as the freeware TCLock.

Hover the mouse over the time and the current date shows up.. or do what Ken
suggested..

What a wonderful example of how Microsoft adds these little touches that
make Windows such a joy to use..

Yes you can.
Right-click the taskbar and click 'Lock the Taskbar'. Then extend the
taskbar upwards. You can now see the date and the clock together. Then
right-click the taskbar and click 'Lock the Taskbar' again.
Done!

except its nor consistent

and if you need a calendar you risk changing your date

and the option he requested is a no brainer that MS hasn't noticed yet

and one more line gives you the day, but even two lines is annoying to
most people,
