Can I delete .xlk backups and why are they created?

It seems that Excel is creating .xlk backups of "certain" files. It is only
happening in a select few files and directories. Why is it doing this and
how can I turn it off?

No, it does the automatic backup regardless of if the AutoRecover settings on
that tab. I put all the backups into a different folder to segregate them
and saved the workbook (name.xls) again and it saves a file called Backup of
name.xlk every single time.

This is a workbook by workbook setting.

File|SaveAs|tools|General Options|

Uncheck that "always create backup" checkbox.

But it's not such a bad thing. A little disk space is cheaper than recreating a
workbook.
