Can I delete microsoft.hta

Someone hacked my microsoft.hta file and I get an obscene message when I boot
up. I have to keep my grandkids away from the PC they enjoy because of it.

Since discovering this I have added anti virus (CA) software with firewall
and got Adaware to supplement my Spybot. But I'd rather not spend a $100 on
an upgrade version of XP Home just to fix this problem - my restore CD won't
cut it!

My questilon is what will happen if I delete this file? I assume it will
stop the obscene message that pops up but will I lose any important
functionality?

Thanks, in advance.

Is this the Microsoft Office.hta that Microsoft stupidly puts into the Startup folder when you install or update Office?

If so, just delete it, then go into Start - All Programs - Startup and make sure there are no other Microsoft Office related items there. FYI, the only thing in my Startup folder is an HP program necessary for my all-in-one printer.

No, Carl.
I don't have Office om my SS budget it's just on in the startup\misc\ folder
as microsoft.hta. I would have already deleted it but I chickened out since I
don't know what that might cost me?

Thanks, anyway.

That file is not supposed to be there. It is spyware or adware. Delete it.

This is malware of some sort. hta files are "Hypertext Application" files, and
may be used for various puposes -- good and bad. If you don't feel comfortable
just deleting it, move it from your Startup folder to the desktop, rename it to
something like checkout.txt and post the contents at one of the "HijackThis"
forums such as http://computercops.biz/forum67.html
