Can I create my own heading style?

P

Paul Lautman

If I go to Insert->Reference->Cross-reference and select "Headings" I can
see a list of all paragraphs that are formatted using one of the "standard"
heading styles.

I should like to add another couple to the list (e.g. an Appendix style).

Is there a way that I can tell word that my new style is a heading style so
that it'll appear in the cross reference list?

No, but you can modify any of the built-in heading styles to serve your
needs.

To elaborate... People seldom need 9 levels of headings. You can format the
built-in ones to have any look you want. So you could use Heading 7-9 for
your Appendix headings if you wanted.

Just hit a slight problem using this method.
In my book (no pun intended), and Appendix heading is the equivalent of a
Heading 1.

If I modify Heading 9, when I look at the list of headings, my new appendix
heading is indented below the others.

I tried altering the Outline Level to 1 but it always reverts back to 9.

Is there a way over this?

No, the outline levels of the built-in headings cannot be changed. But
you can still specify it to display at level 1 when you create your
table of
contents.

As far as cross-references are concerned, outline levels won't cause
any problems, unless you are referencing heading numbering using the
"Heading Number (Full Context)" option, which will include all higher
levels when you reference your Heading 9 paragraph.

For more information about numbering appendixes (including the
cross-reference issue), see:
